The moniker “MEBDKX” was born by combining the names of some of my favorite teachers and activists, Marcus Garvey, W.E.B. DuBois, Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X.  I started using the name “Marcus E.B. DuKing X MEBDKX) on Twitter in 2009 as a way for me to express my opinions on race, culture , and education.  I did not realize it at the time, but the teachings and philosophies of those men had been a major part of my personal life and thus had a huge impact on my perspective, how I saw the world, and post importantly, how I saw Black people.  I began to write regularly  around this time. I originally began writing under the pen name  Marcus E.B. DuKing X and on August 17, 2014 (Marcus Garvey’s birthday)  I officially launched the MEBDKX blog.  At this early stage in my writing career, I really had no focus or discipline in my writing and had moderate success with HBCUs: Get Your Shit Together and “The Brothers FAMU. My my most popular piece (at the time)  came from the Whitley and Dwayne - inspired installment of  Hillman Homecoming: the fictitious world of  Hillman College and all of our favorite alumni. I  started to dabble deeper in Black creative fan fiction and published pieces on Kyle and Maxine (Living Single), Cliff and Claire Huxtable (The Cosby Show), and Martin and Gina (Martin).  The response from readers soon let me know that I was onto something. special.  I pushed my creativity to the limit with Kingversations: An Afro-Futuristic historical account of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, W.E.B. DuBois, and Marcus Garvey. I wrote about Queen Latifah, Janet Jackson, and the cast of Living Single and expressed my love for all things 80’s and 90’s culture with the Generation FleX series. I wrote and developed the Pharaohs in Training after school program.. I was hitting a writing groove I didn’t know I had.  Soon, my writings were making noise on Linkedin, Medium, Facebook, and other social media platforms.
